## Upgrading existing appliances

**SDPCTL** Use [SDPCTL](https://appgate.github.io/sdpctl/) to perform all version 6 upgrades. This desktop tool is available on all major platforms and includes built-in UPGRADE commands that orchestrate the process end-to-end.

The download credentials for the appliance images and upgrade file can be found [here](/v1/docs/a-password-is-required-to-download-the-sdp-appliance-images-and-upgrade-file). If you need help with upgrading to version 6.5, [contact support](/v1/docs/contact-support).

[Upgrade File for v6.5.9](https://bin.appgate-sdp.com/6.5/appliance/Appgate-SDP-6.5.9.img.zip)

> [!NOTE]
> NOTE
>
> Before upgrading, review the deprecations and special upgrade process in the [Release Notes](/v1/docs/release-notes), then see [Upgrading Appliances](/docs/upgrading-appliances-v7-0).

## User clients

Clients and appliances within the same ZTNA version are always compatible. For example, a 6.5.5 client and a 6.5.1 appliance are fully compatible. AppGate guarantees client backward compatibility for at least two ZTNA versions, so a 6.5 client will work with a 6.3 server.

**Windows**

| The Windows client is available in **Full**, **Headless**, **Always-on**, **Multi-user**, and **SSO/PLAP** modes. All modes use a single installer with install-time options and require PowerShell. **Servers must use the Headless or Multi-user client**. |
